One Australian and two United Kingdom sports stars will join Australian cultural icon – supermodel and businesswoman – Elle Macpherson in launching the Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton Relay at Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, Monday 14 March, 2005.

Mr Ronald J Walker AC CBE, Chairman of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, announced the names of the four celebrities who will have the honour of being the first to carry the Queen’s Baton, at a media conference at Australia House in London earlier today.

“The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will incorporate a vibrant arts and cultural program to accompany the two week festival of sporting excellence, and we are thrilled that Elle Macpherson and sporting stars Australia’s Catherine Freeman and the UK’s Dame Kelly Holmes and Amir Khan will all be there on Monday to celebrate the start of the baton’s epic journey to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games,” said Mr Walker.

The four celebrity runners are the first of many thousands of honorary relay runners that will carry the baton containing Her Majesty’s ‘message to the athletes’ from Buckingham Palace to the Opening Ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, one year and one day later, on 15 March 2006.

The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton is the most revolutionary games baton ever produced, containing an electronic version of Her Majesty’s message, two micro cameras, a sound recorder, a GPS tracking device and other innovative features to enable people across the globe to follow the baton’s journey on the internet.

“With the baton visiting all 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth for the first time, our member associations are currently planning their individual relay celebrations, which combine to form an impressive year-long cultural program, comprising many hundreds of community events and uniting all 71 members of the Commonwealth in celebration of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games,” said Mr Mike Fennell CD, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, at the media conference earlier today.

Members of the public are invited to come along to Buckingham Palace to see the commencement celebrations for the Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton Relay and cheer on Elle, Catherine, Dame Kelly and Amir as they carry the baton along The Mall on Monday 14 March.
