Day 30 - Wangaratta to Wodonga
23 February 2006
The historic city of Wodonga, where the first white settlement was established in 1835, features prominently in today's Baton journey north from Wangaratta.
After taking to the skies in a glider, the Baton continues its journey through north-east Victoria, finishing at Wangaratta, famous for its jazz and links to Ned Kelly.
Healesville Sanctuary, one of Victoria's premier wildlife reserves, starts the day's action while Benalla, and its famous roses, will bloom later in the day.
History plays a key role with the Chinese Gardens in Bendigo and the statue of Australian road cycling champion Sir Hubert Opperman in Rochester prominent.
From picturesque Granite Island at Victor Harbor, the Baton heads to the Adelaide Hills and a date with Hahndorf, Australia's oldest German settlement.
From the premier city of the Northern Territory, the Baton heads to Newman, the gateway to the Karijini National Park and a major iron ore production centre.
The Baton takes to the Red Centre on the Ghan, arriving in Katherine. After lunch, the Baton heads north, again on the Ghan, to Darwin where the day's journey ends.
The baton starts at Mount Isa before boarding a plane and flying to Alice Springs, where it will board The Ghan train and travel north to Tennant Creek.
